The Carousel of Progress Is America’s Longest-Running Stage Show

The Magic Kingdom’s Carousel of Progress has had an interesting career. It began its life at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, in which it was the star attraction at the General Electric Pavilion and, along with Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, introduced an astonished world to animatronics. After that, it lived at Disneyland, California, running in that park’s Tomorrowland from 1967 to 1973. And, finally, in 1975 it was moved to Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, where it has remained to this day.

Oh, and it holds the record as the longest-running stage show in American history.

The Carousel of Progress has been updated in 1967, in 1975, in 1981, in 1985, and in 1993. It has now been nearly three decades since its most recent update, which, along with its declining ridership, has caused some fans to worry that it will be removed and replaced. Until that happens, however, it will keep spinning its way into the history books.
